Although the format of the window dates back to the 15th century. In the 18th century the Hamburg bracket was created. The bracket differentiates from other types of window brackets as one part is fixed to the frame while the other is fixed to the window ledge. The bracket can be split apart by lifting the window frame. 

As the Hamburg bracket was an enormous breakthrough in the installation of windows, the brackets we use today for our casement windows are almost identical to the ones used in the 18th century. 

Whether the windows open inwards or outwards in some respects depends on the country. In central and southern Europe, casement windows typically open inwards due to window shutters. However in Scandinavia, casement windows open outward as window shutters are very rare.
