Purchasing guide for doors

With the help of our user-friendly website, we have made the buying process even easier for you than ever before. This guide will walk you through how the buying process works and what you need to know so you can choose the right doors. You can also have a look at our purchasing guide for windows.

1. How to get started?

There are a few things that are important to know when you consider purchasing doors from Klar:

  • Klar does not have physical stores, only an online store where you can select products. In this way we can keep our prices as low as possible for you

  • It is a good idea to start by determining your needs for example whether you wish for improved energy performance, superior insulation or enhanced security. This will simplify the decision-making process for selecting a door suitable for your needs

2. Why purchase new doors?

  • Door deterioration (e.g difficulty to close and open, makes noises)

  • Door has draughts and causes higher energy costs

  • Upgraded aesthetic

Depending on the underlying cause, the issue might be repairable. However, if you are looking to improve the overall energy efficiency of your home and enjoy long- term financial savings on energy costs, consider replacing your old, outdated doors with more energy-efficient options as offered by Klar.

3. Measurement

If you are unsure about how to measure your door correctly, you can get help by reading our measurement guide. It’s easier than you would expect and it doesn’t need to be precise down to the millimeter. Additionally you can save a significant amount of money by doing it yourself.

After choosing the type of door you want for your home, Klar will ask you to put in the specific dimensions of the door you want, whether it’s an old door being renovated or entirely new, which will then give you the correct price in the end!

Klar provides two columns, where you just have to fill in the WIDTH and the HEIGHT of the window

Notice when measuring doors: to pay special attention to the interior conditions and consider especially if the door should be with inward or outward opening.

4. Types of Doors

Front doors

Choosing a front door deserves by far the most of your consideration and attention as it is not only a reflection of your personal style and the interior of your home but also an important barrier that should enhance the security and comfort of your house. Unlike patio doors, ideal front doors have handles on both sides and come with a more sturdy 3-point lock system for added security.

Options suitable for front doors offered by Klar:

French doors

  • Similar to the double patio doors but with hinges that open outwards

Doors with Sidelights

  • For more extra light and space (Sidelights alone can also be purchased)

Single Panel Door

  • The single window pane and inner door handle makes for a clean, minimalistic look

Composite doors

  • A premium product made from several different components such as wood, insulating foam, aluminium, hard-density fibreboard (HDF), glass reinforced plastic (GRP) or PVC

  • Long durability and low-maintenance

  • Sturdy and secure (including a free security package with 3-point locking system)

  • Energy efficient

Patio Doors

Patio Doors serve as the gateway to your homes outdoor sanctuary, whether leading to a pation or a garden. They differ from external doors as they have only an inner handle and larger panes to allow for more natural light to enter. The patio doors offered at Klar are single doors constructed of only one panel, featuring a modern and minimalistic aesthetic.

Options for patio doors offered by Klar:

Single Patio Door:

  • Single door constructed of only one panel and only an inner handle

  • Simple and Sleek design

  • For a minimalistic aesthetic: you can choose to have a fully glazed design or more details and multiple panes or a bottom wood panel

  • Can only be opened from the inside

Double Patio Door:

  • Twin version of patio doors with two-paneled double doors and only an inner handle that allow for more daylight to enter

  • Come in various designs

Tilt and turn patio door:

  • Opening with a turn-tilt function, can open inwards on hinges like a normal door as well as partially from the top, allowing continuous ventilation in a safe way (even in rainy weather)

  • Consisting of glass panels with various partitioning options thanks to struts and dividers

Double tilt and turn patio door:

  • For even more natural light: The larger glass surface of the double patio doors allows more natural light into the room, which brightens the room and creates a more open atmosphere

  • Adds elegance and provides a harmonious transition between indoor and outdoor living

  • Improved energy efficiency

However we do not recommend combining sidelights with our Tilt & Turn doors

Klar's recommendation:

There may not be a singular best exterior door, however it is important to consider whether the external door suits your opening and the overall aesthetic of your home while also meeting the high-quality standards and criteria that you wish the door to fulfill. We recommend you to take a look at our wide selection of front doors as they offer high quality with a high insulation value.

Design your perfect door!

At Klar you can personalize the products you choose to fit the aesthetic of your home while also getting the functionality you desire. You can choose to add the desired number of fillings and panes, both are crucial when it comes to safety and appearance.

In terms of front doors, the first step would be to decide whether you want a plate door or one with a particular combination of fillings and glazing panes. The plate doors from Klar come in six different versions: either a plain, flat front or a more decorative one with vertical ridges. Furthermore, you can also choose to have an oblong rectangular, half-moon or square diamond-shaped window which allows for increased natural light exposure from outside and enhanced visibility of visitors.
When considering combinations of fillings and panes, you have the flexibility to mix and match up to six door fillings, with the option to select between one and eight panes of glass depending on the style of your home.

Lastly you can decide what color the door should have. At Klar we have doors available in anthracite gray, white or black. Your choice of color of course depends on your own personal preferences, but generally white should be fresh and uplifting whereas black is associated with a more sleek and modern style and gray is then the more neutral option between the two.

5. Door Material

At Klar you have the option to choose between Pinewood or Pinewood + Aluminium for doors:

Pinewood + Aluminium

  • Consist of wooden interior and a powder-coated aluminium cladding exterior

  • Almost maintenance-free!

  • Higher price, but extremely high durability

  • Reliable security and burglar protection

  • Aluminium profiles covering the wooden core are weather resistant and unable to rust

  • Modern and luxurious look

  • Klar offers a 12-year warranty on all our aluclad products

Pinewood

  • In comparison require some more maintenance (like painting or staining), but they are generally low-maintenance if properly sealed and cared for

  • Decent thermal insulation and helps reducing heat transfer

  • Classic, warm, rustic and more traditional look, can fit various styles

  • Klar offers a 7-year warranty on all wood products

Klar’s recommendation:

Klar always recommends products made from pinewood and aluminium. This material is the most popular choice in the industry for good reason: it is almost maintenance free, long lasting and more resilient to weather conditions and burglary. Though the initial investment may be higher, aluminium-clad doors provide the best value for your money.

6. Glazing

This section is only important for you if you choose a door with glass panes.

Similar to our window guide, you also have the option to choose between 2-layers or 3-layers of glass panes.

The main difference between these two glazing types are  listed here:

Triple GlazingDouble Glazing
Three panes of glass equally spaced within a frame instead of two, thickness of the sheets of glass can varyMade of two panes sealed in the frame leaving an air space in between, creating an insulating layer between the outdoor and indoor temperature.
More efficient heat retention and energy efficiency compared to double glazing.Insulation layer helps to improve thermal comfort
Reduces noise and UVBudget-friendly
Increased property valueLess Condensation
Double or triple glazing

Image shows the difference between 3- and 2-layered glass.

Klar's recommendation:

3-layer glass is clearly our recommendation, as it can increase the efficiency and value of your home. The more doors with 3-layer glass, the more you will benefit from the current advantages, such as lack of heat loss. You can therefore reduce the energy you use to heat your home when it gets cold or cool it down in the summer.

Number of panes

When choosing the number of panes for your door, you should not only consider whether it fits the overall look of the house, but also where the door is located (whether it is a front door or a patio door). For example a house entrance door with more glazing will create a more open and inviting impression and more light exposure, yet you might think that you should avoid glass panes for your front doors completely in order to maintain the security a front door should provide. However, the main doors from Klar create a strong barrier and can effectively reduce burglary attempts due to the panes coming in either two or three layers of glass. For additional security, Klar offers hardened safety glass which is four times stronger than regular glass.

7. Glass types

TypeFunction
